Part One of a new shelf: Spanish stories, from Patrañas, or Spanish Stories, Legendary and Traditional (London: Griffith and Farran, 1870), collected by Rachel Harriette Busk, who travelled in Spain and gathered these stories from the people who told them. Billed by collector and book, as the tales Busk gathered; not a survey of all Spanish tradition, and no completeness is claimed. The book's opening tales were screened in the order they stand in the book under this shelf's standing rule — eight of the first nine were set aside, every one named with its reason in the shelf register — and the ninth is read here whole.
Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.
Juanita the Bald; or, A Daughter's Love — on the banks of the Tagus, a poor shepherd who would not take money or a castle chooses the gift of a daughter; when blindness takes his sight, fifteen-year-old Juanita leads him to Toledo to find a cure, and sells her glorious hair — the hair that fell to the ground as she knelt in prayer — to pay the doctor's fee of five hundred maravedis, then gives the hair back rather than keep what was bought under a mistake, and is known ever after by the name she chose.
