Pushkin — Ruslan and Lyudmila, Canto Three

Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.

The witch Naina flies in as a winged serpent to warn Chernomor that danger is coming — and the dwarf laughs, for his power lies in his beard, and no sword has cut it yet. In the silent palace Lyudmila tries on his cap, puts it on back-to-front, and vanishes in the mirror: invisible, she is safe. Across the sea of the dead, Ruslan rides over a battlefield of bones, finds armour but no sword fit for his hand — until, in the night fog, the dark hill breathes, sneezes, and wakes: a colossal living Head, guarding the one sword that can shear the beard, with a brother's betrayal to tell.

Ruslan and Lyudmila (Руслан и Людмила), Canto Three — by Alexander Pushkin, in a new English verse translation made for this show, read aloud over a gentle instrumental bed.
