In this episode

A traveller walks unseen among the Kelet, the evil spirits, and stings one of them with a pointed finger; two children, stolen away to a jaw-bone house in the middle of the sea, sing their way out and ride home on the backs of gulls; Raven loses his supper to a company of little girls and is tasselled, tattooed, and pranked into courting his own reflection; and a starving woman, married first to the Man in the Moon and then to a Kele, climbs a ray of light to the Polar Star — who keeps watch over the Lower People, and will not give her back.

From Chukchee Mythology by Waldemar Bogoras (1910), public domain — tales recorded on the Pacific coast of the Chukchee Peninsula in 1900: the first three told by Qotirgin, a Maritime Chukchee man, in the villages of Misqen and Misqan in November 1900, and the last told by Rikewgi at Mariinsky Post in October 1900; heard here in fresh in-house renderings. Northern Tales gathers the Chukchi, Siberian Eskimo, Koryak, Yukaghir and Even tales from Bogoras's Jesup North Pacific Expedition volumes, in the books' own order.
