Holidays of the World — St Andrew’s Day, Scotland’s Patron and the Cross in the Sky, November 30

On the last day of November, Scotland flies a flag that began — so its favourite legend says — as a cross of white cloud in a blue sky. St Andrew’s Day honours a Galilean fisherman who became the patron of nations he never saw: Scotland’s national day, one of Romania’s great feasts, a patron’s day in Greece, and, by a deliberate choice of date and emblem, Independence Day in Barbados.

Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.

One note before we begin: the voices of our cast are generated with artificial intelligence.

The story begins with Andrew himself — fisherman of Bethsaida, the First-Called of the apostles, martyred at Patras on the cross the tradition set at an angle. Then come the two great legends, told as legends: the monk Regulus, warned in a dream, carrying the apostle’s relics to the ends of the earth and ashore at the Fife coast where St Andrews would rise; and the morning in 832 when King Óengus, outnumbered before battle, looked up and saw the white diagonal cross written in cloud. We follow the day as it is kept: Scotland’s bank holiday (written into law in 2007), the ceilidhs and the Big Hoolie, the saltire on the flagpole — and Romania’s Sfântul Andrei, with its sprouting wheat, its garlic-guarded threshold night, and its name-day tables. Patras honours its patron in Greece; Barbados keeps its birthday under two sugar canes crossed in saltire. And we close with the main point: how the emblem of one humble fisherman became the flag and feast of whole nations.
