Every November, Cambodia gives thanks to the water that feeds it. Bon Om Touk — the Water Festival — marks the moment the Tonlé Sap River turns around and flows back toward the sea: three full-moon days of long-boat races, floating lanterns, moon salutations, and the new rice eaten at midnight.

Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.

One note before we begin: the voices of our cast are generated with artificial intelligence.

The story opens in a kingdom built on water — the reservoirs of Angkor, the boat battles carved at the Bayon, and the naval victory that tradition lays at the door of Jayavarman VII — and follows the strangest river in the world as it reverses, breathing the great lake of Tonlé Sap in and out with the seasons. We look at the three days of the full moon, at the painted racing boats with their eyes and their bow dancers, at the little banana-leaf lanterns set adrift at dusk, and at the midnight feast of ak ambok, the flattened new rice fed by hand to children beneath the rabbit in the moon. We travel the festival from town to town — the capital's royal riverfront, Siem Reap, the stilt villages of the lake — telling honestly the quieter shape the festival takes this year, and close with its main point: gratitude, rowed down the river and set alight.
