Holidays of the World — St Martin's Day (Martinmas), November 11

On the eleventh of November, as the dark comes down early over Europe, the children come out carrying light. Handmade paper lanterns, songs everybody knows, a rider on horseback in a red cloak at the head of the procession — this is St Martin's Day, Martinmas, the feast of the soldier who cut his own cloak in two for a stranger in the cold. In this episode we follow the feast from its beginning to its table: the story of Martin of Tours and the divided cloak at Amiens, told as the tradition has carried it; why the feast falls on his burial day, and how Martinmas once turned the whole farming year — rents, hirings, the slaughter and salting for winter, the first taste of the new wine; the lantern processions of Germany, the Laternelaufen, with their songs and their bonfires; the Martin goose and the bread men of the Martinmas table; and the day as it is kept now, by parishes, schools and kindergartens. Then we travel with it: to the Netherlands, where children sing Sint-Maarten door to door for sweets; to Estonia, where the masked mummers of Mardipäev come asking leave to enter; to Malta, where St Martin's bag fills overnight with walnuts, figs and sweet bread; and to Britain and Ireland, where Martinmas survives in term days, hiring fairs and the weather lore of St Martin's summer. A feast of light carried through the dark together — and of the oldest lesson in Europe: share what you have.

This episode is one of our Holidays of the World — a season inside KacheliTV that travels the calendar as faithfully as our tales travel the map, explaining the world's great days as they come round: how each began, how it is kept, and what it means to the people who keep it.
