Holidays of the World — Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), November 1–2

On the first two days of November, in Mexico and wherever Mexican families have carried their traditions, the dead come home — not as ghosts to be feared, but as guests. This first episode of our new shelf, Holidays of the World, tells the whole story of the Day of the Dead: how it began, how it is celebrated, what it means, and how its customs change from town to town. An Aztec feast of flowers that met the Catholic calendar. Two days, one for the children and one for the grown. An altar where every candle, marigold, loaf, and photograph is set out for a reason. A candlelit island in a Michoacán lake, giant kites over Guatemala, and the most hopeful answer to death that any culture has built: the dead are not gone.
