Guernsey Folk Tales — Part 2: Le Faeu Bélengier · Tchi-co · La Bête de la Pendue · The Spectral Cortège · Satan Outwitted · Satan and the Schoolmaster · The Devil and the Tailor · La Délaissance + One More | KacheliTV World Classics
Part Two returns to Guernsey Folk Lore, the great collection made from the manuscripts of Sir Edgar MacCulloch and edited by Edith F. Carey. Nine pieces come in the book's own order, first from the rest of its chapter of Demons and Goblins, then the whole of its Devil chapter, and last one piece from Story Telling: a will-o'-the-wisp on the marsh, a spectral hound at the old town walls, a roaring rock that warns of storms, a headless funeral procession on a night road, a country girl and a schoolmaster who each meet Satan himself, a tailor who takes the Devil's measure, and the coffer that held nothing but a mallet.
Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.
In this part:
- Le Faeu Bélengier — the marsh flame that bears a blacksmith's name out of the old Norse legend, and the treasure it is said to guard.
- Tchi-co, La Bête de la Tour — winter howlings and clanking chains on the old town walls, and a huge beast with flaming saucer eyes.
- La Bête de la Pendue — a light that rises over the western reefs and a rock that roars when a storm is coming.
- The Spectral Cortège — a funeral procession without heads, met where the road climbs from the Castel toward La Haye du Puits.
- Satan Outwitted — a careless Midsummer wish, a field weeded in a day, and a first knot tied in a sheaf of barley straw.
- Satan and the Schoolmaster — Pallot holds his schoolroom against a siege, and yields Satan nothing but the schoolyard gate.
- Another Version of "Satan and the Schoolmaster" — a boy reads the wrong book aloud, and Satan is set to pitch peas with a three-pronged fork.
- The Devil and the Tailor — a gentleman in black orders trousers, and has no legs to be measured for them.
- La Délaissance — a father's strong-box, opened before witnesses, holds one mallet and a rhyme.

Source and rights: the pieces performed here are from Guernsey Folk Lore (London: Elliot Stock, 1903), from the manuscripts of Sir Edgar MacCulloch (died 1896), edited by Edith F. Carey (died 1935), read from the complete public-domain text at Project Gutenberg. This shelf is Guernsey only; no completeness for the book is claimed. Herodias stands held with sacred material. Part One's exclusions stand: The Invasion of Guernsey by the Fairies, The Fairies and the Nurse, The Fairies and the Midwife, and Le Gibet des Faies are not read. The Legend of the Ville au Roi stands benched pending its by-name screen, and a Recent Appearance of the Devil stands benched after screening; the witch-trial records are not narrated, and the Ghosts, Charms, and Historical Reminiscences chapters stand benched for later parts. Where La Délaissance prints a Guernsey-French rhyme and a Latin will, the performance speaks them as printed.
Narrated by Amos.
