In this episode

Four shorter tales open the Jacobs block. In the first, a white crane draws a bone from a lion's throat and learns what gratitude a king of beasts keeps. In the second, a miserly Brahman daydreams over his hanging pot of rice — goats, cows, a house, a son — until one kick shatters pot and dream together. In the third, seven brothers' wives persecute the sister who cooks for them all; she is lost to the water, and returns as a bamboo fiddle whose music sings out the truth. In the fourth, a crane ferries fish to a finer pond and eats them one by one — until a crab takes the last flight, and takes the crane's measure instead.

A note on what is not read here. This part tells its tales whole and uncut. The shelf as a whole makes no claim to completeness: five tales from the five source collections are excluded whole under the house law, and two items are held for the owner's ruling by name; all are named in the shelf's exclusion register, not silently dropped, and nothing excluded there touches this part.

From Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs (1892), public domain; the Jataka and Panchatantra tales Jacobs retold from the older collections, told here in a modern in-house rendering. Narrated by Magnolia.

Music: "January Lament" — instrumental opening and closing theme, with short instrumental separators between the stories.

KacheliTV — world classics, read aloud.
