Folk Tales of Frisia — Part 1 (The Earth-Mannikins · The Clever Farmer's Daughter · Three Wishes · Uncle Bouwe and Aunt Antje)
Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.
Part one — the premiere of a new shelf. Four folk tales of Frisia, the old coastal province of the northern Netherlands, collected by Waling Dykstra and published in the third section of the second volume of his Uit Friesland's volksleven van vroeger en later (Leeuwarden, 1892–96); heard here in a fresh translation from the Dutch. In The Earth-Mannikins, a stammering farmhand watches the little people of the earth dance and sing in a moonlit cornfield, and learns their threshing song. In The Clever Farmer's Daughter, a poor man's daughter answers every riddle her lord can set her — and outwits him at the very last. In Three Wishes, a husband and wife are granted three wishes, and spend them as carelessly as wishes are always spent. And in Uncle Bouwe and Aunt Antje, the old couple sit down to a weever fish by the fire — a small, warm tale of a Frisian household. The episode opens and closes with its theme, Crimson Peak, heard also briefly between the stories.
