Peruvian Folk Tales — Part 2: An Original Lawsuit · The Little Fish · Drink, Father — It Gives You Life
Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.
Three more tales of old Peru from the Tradiciones Peruanas of Ricardo Palma (1833–1919) — heard here in a fresh English translation made for this series from the Second Series of 1874, with one tale carried over from the First.
Two proud carriages meet at a Lima street corner, and neither coachman will give way: the whole titled city gathers, the Viceroy washes his hands of the science of heraldry, and the carriages stand in the street for two years while a king in Spain decides — and the passers-by decide the wheels. A cacique of Mansiche gives his Spanish godbrother a burial vault full of gold — a little fish with emerald eyes — on one sworn condition, and watches what a broken oath makes of a man. And a lady governing Peru in her husband's absence tests a suspected spy in the only way that cannot be faked: she sits him down to dinner, and waits for him to drink.
