Faroese Folk Tales — Part 1: The Hidden Man under Lidastein · The Changeling Child · Oskudolgur, the Cinderlad · The Fox and the Bear · Two Suitor Tales
Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.
Five tales from the Faroe Islands, from Jakob Jakobsen's Faroese Folk Legends and Fairy Tales (1898–1901), in a fresh translation made for KacheliTV.
A hidden man stands in the farmyard at Kalgard on winter evenings, leaning his great hands on the roof-beam at a wedding, and no one is harmed; at the last he tells Jogvan why they will meet no more. A baby at Vidareidi who will not thrive is unmasked by four eggshells of water set at the corners of the hearth. Oskudolgur, the cinderlad whom nobody thought anything of, catches the great bird that steals his father's corn — and trades its life for a feather that grants a wish. The fox christens the white bear's Christmas butter away, one christening at a time: Top of the Pot, Half Way Down, All Eaten Up. And two young men go courting: one finds the girl who sets a room to rights, and the other finds out what a year of spinning the same wool really means.
