In this episode

Two more tales of the Zulus, taken down in their own words and translated by the Reverend Canon Henry Callaway for his Nursery Tales, Traditions, and Histories of the Zulus (1868) — stories told in the kraals of Natal, many of them by women to children.

Disclosure: this performance is narrated by AI-generated voices.

Umdhlubu, the king's beloved little daughter, is lost in the valley through the plotting of her father's other wives, and is found and raised in a stranger's kraal — until a great frog comes out of the river, swallows her treasures and herself, and carries her home, refusing every threat with the same words: "I am but a frog; I will not be killed." And in the first telling of the Origin of Baboons, a whole tribe of idlers fastens pick-handles behind them, grows tails, and goes to live on the precipices.
